Oshkosh May 19-A very windy, cold night greeted the second race of 2017. A solid field of 121 cars filled the pit and a crowd of loyal, die hard race fans braved the weather to see a great night of action at the SpeedZone Friday.
The Don Herman Auto Repair IMCA Sport Mods took the first feature flag with Jayden Schmdit grabbing the top spot followed by Kevin Bethke, Bernie Miller, Robby Thiel and Brock Saunders. Several cautions kept the field bunched and Saunders was able to move into the top spot on lap 6. Scott Besaw, Lucas Lamberies and Chris Budzban all joined the race for the lead. Despite several more cautions that eventually cut the race short, Saunders was able to hold off all challengers to record his first feature win here Since July 31, 2015. Bethke maintained the runner up spot to the finish with Besaw, Budzban, Lamberies and Tim Warner rounding out the top six.
Tim Reichenberger grabbed the lead at the start of the Gold Star Racing Products Grand National main and opened a lead as the rest of the field tried to sort oout behind. Larry Richards was finally able to break free of the pack into second and set out to run down Reichenberger. With 5 laps remaining, Richards moved behind the leader and despite several charges alongside, Reichenberger was able to fend off each attempt and won his first feature of the season. Richards settled for second with Tim Doehling, Jeff Richards, Brian Vinney, Jr and Rich Garb rounding out the top six.
Steve Schneider blasted into the lead of the Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifed main with Kodiak Wirtz Ryan Besaw, Dan Roedl and Joey Taycher tucking in behind. Over the first few laps, Schneider was able to open a lead on the pack until a lone caution came out on lap 6, Roedl moved into the runner up spot after the restart and stay right behind Schneider as the pair moved away for the battle for third. Schneider was hugging the inside line and Roedl was using every horse under the hood to continually charge alongside in the corners, but could not keep the momentum out of the turns to take charge. With 5 laps left, Schneider was able to creep ahead and secured his first feature win of the season. Roedl was able to take second with Konnor Wilinski ending a run from 10th to challenge for second over the final couple laps, ending in third. Mike Wedelstadt also made a long run from 15th to take fourth. Zeke Bishofberger and Matt Klenz rounded out the top six.
The Nolte’s Repair and Towing Street Stocks were up next with Brandon Ross taking the initial lead with Chase Solomon moving into the top spot on lap 3. Jeff Wicinski moved into the battle for the top spot on lap 6. A Lap 9 caution bunched the field with Solomon again taking the point. Wicinski was all over the leader after the restart with Ross battling with Jesse Krahn , Mark Schultz, Lexii Ashcraft, Brady Baldry and Alex Crapser. Wiciniski was finally able to win the duel of the lead on lap 13 and opened a bit of a gap before a crash red flagged the race on lap 16. Ashcraft, Logan Schmeck and Dan Knaus got together out of turn 2. After the drivers were out of their cars, the Knaus machine burst into flames, which required foam to get out. No one was injured.
Wicinski continued at the point for the final 4 laps with Krahn taking the runner up spot on the final lap. Baldry finish third with Mike Carter taking 4th. Solomon placed fifth and Ross rounded out the top six.
Scott Karbon took the initial lead in the Outlaw Chassis IMCA Stock Car main. Dan Miller, Harley Simon, Jerry Winkler and Aaron Stolp followed. Jeremy Christians quickly moved from mid pack and took over the top spot on lap 7. Once in control Christians pulled away leaving the rest of the field to race for second place. Joe White, Winkler, Travis Van Straten and Stolp battled the rest of the race and when the victory banner flew, Christians garnered his first feature win of the season with White winning the battle for second place over Van Straten, Winkler, Karbon and Stolp.
Mike Meier took the lead in the Lynn’s Service Center IMCA Dirt Devils on lap 4 and despite heavy pressure from Chris Maas for much of the second half of the race, was able to win his first feature of the season. Cody Pankow took third with Mitch Meier, Mitchell Lee Fairbank and Kasey Gross rounding out the top six.
Next Friday night, the Dirt King Late Models will join the IMCA Stock Cars, Sport Mods and Dirt Devils for a big night of action at the SpeedZone. Racing starts at 7 PM
